March 6, 2024  – Hoekstra Transportation, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and The Bus Center Family of Companies (Mid-South Bus Center, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Transportation South, Pelham, Ala.; and The Bus Center – Atlanta, Acworth, Ga.), are pleased to announce their merger.  

Following Hoekstra’s purchase of an equity interest in The Bus Center Family, the four companies now represent one of the largest and most comprehensive providers of bus and van transportation in the country. The companies offer sales and service for the leading manufacturers in the industry, including Thomas Built Bus and Forest River, and a physical footprint that spans from the Southeast into the upper Midwest.

The Bus Center Family of Companies Welcomes David Nethercut 

Murfreesboro, TennesseeThe Bus Center Family of Companies has announced the addition of David Nethercut as the new EV Program Manager.  In this new capacity, Nethercut will assist Mid-South Bus Center (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), and its sister companies Transportation South, Inc. (Pelham, Al.) and The Bus Center – Atlanta (Acworth, Ga.) sales teams in developing electrification opportunities within both the school bus and commercial vehicle markets.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dec. 4, 2023 – Transportation South, Inc., Alabama’s largest school bus provider, and Thomas Built Buses, the industry’s largest provider of all electric school buses, are pleased to announce Tuscumbia City Schools will be the first school system in the state of Alabama to receive a Thomas Built Bus SAF-T-LINER® C2 Jouley, the first Electric School Bus being delivered with the EPA Clean School Bus Program. On Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, a celebration presentation of the bus and a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Deshler High School Auditorium, located at 200 N. Commons St. E. (Tuscumbia, AL 35674).

Round 2 of the EPA Clean School Bus Program, a $5 Billion program designed to help schools electrify their school bus fleets.  Round 1 provided several school systems across the state with enough funding to purchase over 50 electric school buses. Let’s keep as much of this money coming to our state schools as possible. Applications for Round 2 just opened in April.

Our School Bus Staff in Birmingham and Nashville are available as a resource if you have questions or need help applying.  Our Team helped secure funding in round 1 and we can do the same for your school district.

Mark Coffey has been promoted to the newly formed position of Mobile Service and Training Manager. Mark will coordinate technician training for all aspects of the company, both internally and externally. He will additionally serve to develop mobile technicians and their responsibilities as technology continues to evolve. Mark has been with the company 10 years servicing school systems throughout North Alabama. This position allows Mark to serve customers throughout the state.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has opened applications for their 2022 Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
Grant Program!  The State of Alabama has allocated $2 million this year for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.
