Pelham Senior Center Enjoys New Bus

Members of the Pelham Senior Center recently became the proud new owners of a 25-passenger bus purchased on April 5 from Transportation South’s headquarters in Pelham. The new bus was personally delivered to the seniors by Pelham Mayor Don Murphy just three days after the Pelham City Council voted to approve the $53,500 purchase.

“This is over three years in the making. It’s a dream come true,” said Pelham Library Director Barbara Roberts.

The bus will replace a 15-passenger van Roberts said was unreliable and difficult for the seniors to enter and exit.

"Not a penny of this purchase came from taxpayer money," said Murphy, noting Roberts was instrumental in securing a $35,000 Shelby County Health Foundation grant to use for the purchase.

The rest of the project was funded by bake sales and garage sales held by the seniors, a $1,000 Walmart grant and financial support from Shelby County Commissioner Dan Acker Sr., state Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin and state Sen. Cam Ward.

Pelham Senior Center member Roy Jowers said the new bus is a culmination of years of work by the city’s seniors. "Every one of us earned this bus. We put in a lot of long nights, but it's finally paid off," he said.

The seniors commemorated the jubilant day by eating two bus-themed cakes to celebrate their accomplishment. With the addition of this new bus, the Pelham Senior Center hopes to be able to provide more opportunities for its members. The seniors and their new bus will take their first ride together on April 26 to the McWane Center in downtown Birmingham.

At Transportation South, we love to see our customers taking delight in the buses we provide to them. We aren't in this business just to sell buses and to make money - we truly do look to make people happy and we make every effort to match them with the best bus possible. We are proud to have helped the members of the Pelham Senior Center be able to now travel comfortably as well as safely.
